Master ResearchRabbit: Complete Tutorial

Your AI-Powered Literature Discovery Partner. Stop searching, start discovering.

What is ResearchRabbit?

Think of ResearchRabbit as "Spotify for papers." Instead of relying only on keywords, you use its AI to find related articles based on connections. You "seed" it with a few key papers, and it builds a network around them, showing you:

Crucially, ResearchRabbit is "free forever for researchers." This makes it an essential tool for students, as similar tools like Connected Papers limit you to only a few free searches.

How to Use It: A 7-Step Workflow

1

Understand Your Folders

The most important concept to grasp is the two-level folder system. Getting this right from the start will keep you organised.

Concept What It Is (and Why You Should Use It)
Category Think of this as a **main folder** for a big project (e.g., your dissertation, a specific course). It keeps all related research grouped together.
Collection Think of this as a **sub-folder** for a specific theme *within* that project (e.g., "Chapter 1: Literature Review," "Methods Section").
2

Create a "Collection"

Inside your main Category, create your first Collection. This is the folder where you will save all the papers you find for this specific topic.

3

Add "Seed Papers"

Find 1-5 papers you know are highly relevant to your topic. You can add them by title, DOI, or by importing your Zotero/Mendeley library. These seed papers help the tool understand what you are looking for.

4

Explore the Network

Click on one of your seed papers. ResearchRabbit will instantly show you columns for "Similar Work," "Earlier Work," and "Later Work." This is your main discovery engine.

5

Build Your Collection

As you explore, click the "+" button on any interesting papers to add them to your Collection. Each paper you add makes the recommendations smarter. Saved papers will turn **green** in the list.

6

Visualise the Graph & Timeline

Click the "Graph" view to see a visual map of your papers. This helps you spot connections and identify key authors. Critically, use the **Timeline View** at the bottom to see the chronological history of the research and how ideas have evolved.

Coach's Tip:

The discovery graph view **does not save** when you navigate away. It is a temporary workspace for exploration. The only things that save are the papers you explicitly add to your Collection. Use the graph to find papers, then add them!

7

Set Up Alerts

Once your Collection is strong, click the "Monitor" button. ResearchRabbit will email you when new papers are published that are relevant to your Collection, keeping you up-to-date automatically.

Core Functions

Seed-Based Discovery

Find "Similar," "Earlier," and "Later" work for any paper, allowing you to move forwards and backwards in the citation chain.

Interactive Network Graphs

Visualise the connections between papers and authors to understand the structure of a research field and identify key clusters.

Smart Collections

Organise your papers into "playlists" for different projects. Connect to Zotero to sync your existing library automatically.

Continuous Monitoring

Set alerts on your Collections or on specific authors to receive email notifications when new, relevant research is published.

Pro-Tips for Better Results

Power-Up: Connect Zotero Immediately

This is the most important thing you can do. It creates a seamless system to find papers in ResearchRabbit and automatically have them ready for citation in Zotero. Any paper you add to a synced collection in ResearchRabbit will appear in your Zotero library.

How to Connect:

  1. Sync Zotero First: Open your Zotero desktop app and press the "Sync" button. ResearchRabbit connects to your *online* Zotero library, so it must be up-to-date.
  2. Import in ResearchRabbit: On your dashboard, click "Import Zotero collection".
  3. Log In: You will be prompted to log in to your online Zotero account to authorise the connection.
  4. Choose Collection: Select the Zotero collection you want to sync. Now you are ready to go.
  • Use Multiple Seed Papers: A collection with 5-10 good seed papers will give you *much* better recommendations than a collection with just one.
  • Follow Key Authors: When you find a paper you love, click the author's name. ResearchRabbit will show you their other work, and you can "Follow" them to be alerted of their new publications.
  • Read the Graph: In the graph view, larger dots (nodes) often represent papers with more connections (citations). This can help you quickly identify seminal papers in the field.
  • Be Selective: Do not add every paper to your collection. Be critical. A clean, focused collection is more useful than a "dump" folder.
