Source and Format Options

Gemini Notebook supports sources such as documents, websites and supported public YouTube videos. Check current source support and permission to upload material rather than relying on a fixed format list.

Audio Overviews: Gemini Notebook can create audio overviews of selected readings; check their key points against the originals.
YouTube Sources: A supported public YouTube URL supplies its available caption transcript as source material; do not assume the visuals were analysed.
Mind Maps and Infographics: Gemini Notebook can create these from sources; check the proposed relationships and data.

Grounded, But Not Magic

Source-grounded means the system is asked to generate its response using sources you have selected. It does not mean that every statement is correct or that the system has interpreted those sources appropriately. Working from selected sources can make claims easier to trace and verify and can reduce some forms of unsupported generation.

Notebook-source chat in Gemini Notebook is grounded in the notebook sources. In the wider Gemini app, notebook responses may also use web search and other Gemini tools. Check which app and sources you are using; see Google’s explanation of the differences.

Focused Source Set: Use a small, relevant set of readings rather than dumping everything into one notebook.
Citations are Key: Where citations are supplied, open the relevant original passage and check that it supports the claim; do not assume every claim has a valid citation.
Privacy Depends on Account Type: Source grounding is about the evidence used for an answer, not data privacy or security. Check institutional permission, current provider terms and the consumer or institution/workspace account you are actually using before uploading assessed, unpublished, personal, confidential or otherwise sensitive material.

Critical Warning: Hallucinations Can Still Happen

A selected source set can make answers more traceable, but the AI may miss qualifications, misread a passage or combine unrelated facts. Grounding does not establish accuracy, privacy or assessment permission. Follow the detailed verification guidance and permission and privacy guidance.

Open supplied citations and read the original source in context to check that it actually supports the answer.

Gemini Notebook can create the output types below. Availability, limits and options can depend on account, device, rollout or plan; check current Google documentation. Generated materials are not themselves academic evidence, and creating them does not itself produce learning.

Gemini Notebook can create Audio Overviews from selected sources. Use a generated discussion for orientation, then check its claims against the originals and attempt questions or explain the ideas yourself.

Gemini Notebook can create Video Overviews from notebook sources. Adding a supported public YouTube URL as a source is different: the input is its available caption transcript, not necessarily the visual content. Check any summary or generated overview against the original sources.
